Job purpose


School social workers assist students with academic learning by providing strategic services that identify and address the social-emotional-environmental issues that interfere with the educational process. Working with parents/guardians, teachers, school principals, and community based resources, the school social worker implements strategies that promote students’ positive school adjustment. School social workers are members of the Counseling department. The social worker is assigned to each campus based upon the identified needs of the student population.


Duties and responsibilities

  • Identifies and assesses educational problems through psychological analysis of factors impinging on student adjustment (includes factors in the home, school, and community).
  • Serves as a liaison between families and school to positively promote collaboration in educational planning for students, including encouraging parent/guardian participation in the school setting
  • Collaborates with school staff, parents, and other school system personnel in identifying strategies to promote student learning and helping to facilitate implementation.
  • District wide SEB Coach
  • Participates as a member of the Child Study Team/Student Needs Team and other school-based teams to develop interventions and supports which promote students’ educational success.
  • Provides crisis intervention services in partnership with building principal
  • Provides staff consultation on behavioral-emotional-environmental issues affecting student participation in the learning process.
  • Conducts preventative support to students through psycho-education, skills development, and presentations
  • Provides school social work services through individual and group sessions to address emotional and behavioral functioning in the classroom (not intended as intensive therapy).
  • Maintains required records and appropriate documentation.
  • Completes risk assessments, functional behavior assessments, and classroom observations on identified students
  • Connects students with community services and develops relationships with counselors/therapists.
  • Fulfills professional responsibilities such as maintaining confidentiality, following ethical and legal guidelines, attending inservice and staff meetings, pursuing professional growth and performing job duties in an organized, accurate, timely, and dependable manner.

Professional Qualifications

Individuals employed as school social workers must have earned a Master of Social Work degree, which includes a minimum of 500 clock hours of supervised social work practicum experience. In addition, school social workers must have a valid Michigan Social Work License, School Social Work certification, and have demonstrated knowledge/competence in four additional areas: 2) child psychopathology, 2) diagnosis, assessment, and testing, 3) educational disabilities and their impact on children and families, and 4) the practice of social work in educational settings
