Dean of Counseling
Seeking a Dean of Counseling to support students in academic achievement, planning for college and career readiness, and personal and social development.
The Dean of (Guidance and School) Counseling serves as a key member of the Upper School Building Leadership Team and partners with the Director of College and Career Counseling to provide a robust counseling program to all students. The Dean of Counseling supports students in academic achievement, planning for college and career readiness, and personal and social development.
This is a 12-month position.
Job Requirements
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Academic Counseling:
- Manage 4-year academic plans that challenge students and prepare them for college and/or career readiness
- Monitor student academic progress and organize honor rolls and extra-curricular academic opportunities
- Identify students at risk for academic, spiritual, or social concerns
- Communicate/manage academic probation for students
- Coordinate home instruction when necessary
- Maintain accurate and current student records and files
- Monitor student progress to ensure graduation requirements are fulfilled
- Partner with the principal and admissions office to audit transcripts of prospective students and support the transition of student records between schools
Social/ Emotional Counseling
- Counsel (intervene and assess the needs of)students with acute (apparent) personal and psychological issues that affect their performance, behavior, and/(Or) socialization in school
- Refer students with chronic personal and psychological issues to local mental healthcare providers
- Liaise as appropriate with outside support services to help students with emotional, personal, or psychological issues
- Communicate with parents/guardians, faculty, and staff to understand and support students’ social/emotional challenges and needs
- Maintain case files and reports to track student progress and needs
Scheduling:
- Collaborate with other Building Leadership Team members to create and maintain the master schedule and course catalog
- Partner with parents and students to create academically-appropriate schedules for each student
- Assist with new family/student interviews, placement testing, and schedule creation for new students
- Update online records and manage course changes, withdrawals, or late entries
- Register and oversee students taking online courses, dual enrollment courses, and/or internships
Academic Records:
- Manage report card distribution
- In collaboration with the Guidance Assistant/Registrar, ensure transcript records are maintained and accessible for alumni
Testing Coordination:
- Schedule and supervise the administration of standardized tests, including PSAT, MAP, and AP tests
- Maintain and analyze testing data to identify trends and inform instructional and curricular decisions
- Coordinate with Educational Support and teachers to provide accommodations and/or modifications for students with Educational Service Plans
Other:
- Participate in events and programs such as Orientation, Back to School Nights, Open Houses, Conferences, Graduation, and other student events
- Plan, facilitate, and provide logistical leadership for the annual Awards Night
- In collaboration with the principal and administrative support staff, plan and facilitate the annual graduation ceremony
- Supervise the Guidance Assistant/Registrar
- Serve as a mentor group leader for students
- Support the hiring process for faculty and staff as needed
- Other duties as assigned
