School Personal Counsellor (K-12)

Abbotsford Christian School is currently accepting applications for K-12 SCHOOL COUNSELLOR.

The successful applicant would be responsible for PERSONAL counselling, in collaboration with our current personal counsellor. The position could include supporting students from kindergarten to grade 12. The successful applicant would also work collaboratively with teaching staff to develop and deliver mental health classroom strategies that support our students. The detailed roles and responsibilities of the personal counsellor would include:

  • Provide counselling support for all three schools (elementary, middle, and secondary campuses)
  • Promote the personal and social development for all students appropriate to developmental stages
  • Provide short-term counseling to address mental health and other interpersonal challenges through a variety of counselling modalities including one-on-one support, group counselling, family support etc.)
  • Work in a multidisciplinary School Based team to effectively address student needs
  • Work with the Learning Support Services as well as administrative team in the development of IEP's and behaviour plans
  • Liaise with outside services (I.e. Ministry of Children and Family, Child, and Youth Mental Health, The Foundry, Fraser Health, etc.)
  • Support teachers in facilitating social emotional learning within the classroom
  • Participate in Restorative Practices as counsellor
  • Interdepartmental support liaison (Learning Support Services, International, etc.)
  • Works closely with Student Life Centre at the secondary campus
  • Be an active member of the system-wide mental health team.
  • Works closely with the screening committees at elementary and middle Campuses to triage students that are referred for counselling. Provide regular feedback to screening committee regarding student’s progress
  • Develop classroom-based programming and professional development for classroom teachers
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records
  • Administration of Level B screening protocols (i.e. Conners, BASC)

  • Adaptable, professional, self-starter, confident, reliable, confidential, and optimistic

Education Requirements

Specific preferred qualifications include:

  • BA Degree in Education (or equivalent)
  • MA Degree in Counselling
  • Registration with provincial Board (BCACC, BCSCA)
  • BC Teaching Certificate
  • Leadership experience
  • Clear understanding of “at-risk youth” protocols
  • Experience in Restorative Practices
  • Clear understanding of Christian education and Christian counselling
  • Extensive knowledge of academic requirements for secondary school and post-secondary education and vocation
