About the US Insurance Plan

General Provisions:

The full and limited benefit plan includes:

  • Hospital/medical benefits
  • Dental (if dental has been elected by the school)
  • Life
  • Accidental death and dismemberment
  • Long-term disability

Dental benefits are optional on a school-by-school basis. In addition, vision benefits, optional term life insurance, hospital indemnity, critical illness, and accident insurance can be purchased on an individual basis.


The plan is available to active full-time and certain part-time employees of our member schools and affiliated institutions and colleges in the U.S. The plan is administered by a board of trustees; the day-to-day administration and operation are carried out by our employee benefits department. Benefits are underwritten by Starmark Insurance Company, Blue Cross, Priority Health, Delta Dental, the Hartford Life Insurance, and Vision Service Plan. Availability of plans depends on the location of the school.


Life Insurance for Employees:
All plans provide $20,000, $50,000, or $100,000 of life insurance coverage until an employee attains age 70. The first day of the calendar month following the employee’s 70th birthday, the $20,000, $50,000, or $100,000 benefit is reduced 35 percent. Additional 20 percent reduction occurs upon attainment of age 75 and an additional 15 percent at age 80.

Life Insurance for Covered Dependents:
All plans provide $10,000 of life insurance coverage on enrolled spouses as well as $2,000 of coverage on all covered dependents who have attained the age of 14 days and $1,000 from birth to 14 days.

Optional Life Insurance for Employees and Spouses:
Individuals may elect up to $250,000 in units of $10,000 as supplemental life insurance.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment for Employees:
Schedule of coverage is equal to the life insurance amount. Twenty-four hour coverage is provided.  Individuals may elect supplemental AD&D insurance in units of $10,000.

Long-Term Disability:
All plans provide a monthly benefit equal to 60 percent or 66-2/3 percent of salary, subject to a maximum of $5,000 or $9,000 reduced by certain other income.

Optional Hospital Indemnity, optional Critical Illness, and optional Accident Insurance.
All covered employees are eligible to add Hospital Indemnity Insurance, Critical Illness Insurance, and/or Accident Insurance to their policy.  These coverages can only be added during the open enrollment period each year.

Optional Vision:
All covered employees are eligible for the vision benefit offered through VSP.  Two options are available:  VSP 1 & VSP 2.

Comprehensive Health Care:

Adoption Benefit:

Provides up to $3,000 for eligible expenses. 

Dental Expense Benefits (Optional)

  • Maximum $1,500 per fiscal year
  • $1,500 course of orthodontia
  • Fiscal year deductible: $50 per person/$150 per family
  • Coinsurance: 50 percent crowns, dentures, bridge work, gold fillings, gold onlays, gold inlays, and orthodontia; 80 percent all other charges; 100 percent diagnostic and preventive
